HR consulting
Practical HR for businesses that have staff and no HR person: documents that fit your award, and someone to ask when a situation gets tricky.
Volka is a Brisbane-based consultancy that provides HR consulting to Australian small businesses. It prepares the documents and processes that employers need, and gives managers a person to ask when a people issue comes up.

Who it is for
Owners and managers of businesses with a handful to a few dozen staff, where HR is done by whoever has time. Often that is the owner.
Signs you need it
- Staff started on a handshake and a text message.
- Your contracts came from an online template and nobody checked which award applies.
- You are not sure each person is paid the right rate for their role.
- A manager is unsure how to handle poor performance or a complaint.
- You have no written policies for leave, conduct or probation.
What Volka does
Prepares employment contracts checked against the relevant award or agreement, and flags where a lawyer should look.
Checks classifications and pay rates against the award.
Sets up onboarding: welcome documents, checklists and a first-weeks plan.
Writes short, usable policies for leave, conduct, probation and the like.
Supports managers through performance conversations and employee relations issues, with notes and documents.
Gives on-demand advice to managers when a situation comes up.
Helps with a single hire: role scope, advertisement, interview structure, reference checks and onboarding paperwork.
Volka does not run workplace investigations. Where one is needed, it refers you to a qualified investigator.
Volka does not supply labour hire and is not a recruitment agency. Help with a single hire is part of HR consulting, not a separate service.
What you get at the end
- Contracts and policies that match your business and your award.
- A simple onboarding process for new starters.
- A manager who knows what to do next time.
Volka does not promise compliance as an outcome. It does the preparation carefully and tells you when something needs a lawyer.
What the work looks like
A sample of a finished piece. It is made up, and it is labelled as a sample.
Role chartWho decides, who does it and who is told, for each decision.
Samples. The business and the steps are made up.
How it starts
A free 15-minute call, then an operations review, pointed at what you have now: contracts, pay rates, policies and how people are managed. You get a written list of what to fix first and a written scope for doing it, with the price agreed in that scope. Support can continue on a monthly retainer.
Questions
- Is Volka’s HR consulting legal advice?
No. Volka provides practical HR support and general information. When a matter needs legal advice, such as a dispute or a termination with risk attached, Volka says so and recommends you speak to an employment lawyer.
- When should a small business get HR help?
The best time is before or at the first hire. Other common triggers are taking on casuals or contractors, a conflict between staff, or doubt about whether your contracts and pay rates are right.
- Does Volka provide recruitment or labour hire?
Volka helps with a single hire by scoping the role, writing the advertisement, structuring interviews, checking references and preparing onboarding paperwork. It is not a recruitment agency and does not supply labour hire.
- How is HR consulting priced?
Scope and price are written down before work starts, either for a defined piece of work or as a monthly retainer for ongoing support.
